irregular-menses-causesIf you have irregular menses, it is important to know the factors that may induce irregularity in the menstrual cycle.

The exact cause is not known but The following are the common factors which are most likely to be responsible:

2. medications and substances: some medicine and substances induce changes in corpus leuteum (ovarian follicle) and disrupt its functions. medicines can also
interfere with the metabolism of estrogen and progesterone - the hormones regulating the menstrual cycle.

4. Smoking: smoking tends to shorten the menstrual cycle. smoking shortens the follicular as well as the luteal phase of the menstrual cycle. Heavy smokers have more infrequent and variable menstrual periods than normal nonsmokers. even smoking 10 cigarettes a day can induce infrequent and early menstrual bleeding.

5. Alcohol: Acute and excessive Alcohol consumption are also known to alter the menstrual pattern.
Sometimes it shortens cycles while at other times it can cause a delay of menses. The alcohol is thought to affect the liver's ability to properly metabolize estrogen and progesterone.
